Mummifying tomatoes!

15th Oct 2022

Mrs. Mc Swiggan’s class are learning  about ‘Ancient Egypt’.  The ancient Egyptians believed that the body of a dead person needed to be preserved in order that the spirit of the deceased could live on in the afterlife. The pupils discovered that anything that used to be alive can be mummified. The pupils mummified tomatoes by creating the conditions used in ‘Ancient Egypt’.  A very interesting and engaging experiment for the pupils who then recorded their results.

Mrs. Mc Swiggan’s class observed carefully what happened to the tomato when the children took no steps to preserve the tomato. The pupils soon discovered when they removed the lid that this was not the nicest observation to record.

However, the end result for the tomato which was mummified, was not as difficult to observe.  The process of mummification dried the tomato out which prevented decay and mould growing; preserving the tomato in its original state.
